10 Tips For Teachers Preparing Students for the Cambridge English: Advanced
Gabriele Hille-Coates from Göttingen has been preparing candidates for the Cambridge English: Advanced at a German state school for many years and would like to share the following ten tips with you for your students:
- Make your students devise exam questions for one another. This is not only psychologically good for them, but they will also get a better understanding of the deeper structures of the tasks given to them in the exam. This applies to the tasks of all five Papers.
- For Reading, you should encourage your students particularly to set Part 3 tasks for one another. Point out to them that they need to excise portions of the text that give the examinee clues through cohesive devices such as pronouns, adverbs, or back references by means of synonyms etc. Tell them to devise a clever distractor by inserting a false track, e.g. by encouraging the examinee to do keyword spotting.
- For Writing, you should make your students keep an error file throughout the whole of your preparation course. They need to document their mistakes in sections (spelling, tense, adverbs, etc.) and work with them regularly (at least 20 minutes per week).
- It has proved a great help to collect the mistakes and errors your students make in their written texts and to draw up a “Mistake Spotting” sheet every couple of sessions. Students very much enjoy correcting one another’s mistakes and it’s an effective way of getting rid of common mistakes.
- In order to improve your students’ command of words, have game of “Outburst” at the beginning or end of each session. For this, you divide the group into halves and give group 1 a general keyword, such as “team sports”, “mammals”, “parts of the body”, “illnesses”, “environmental conservation” etc. The group then has 90 seconds to produce as many words to do with this keyword as possible. You as the teacher count their words by means of strokes on your whiteboard. Then the second group has a go. The group that produces most words, wins.
- In order to broaden your students’ creative use of words they already know, give them “Full House” exercises as homework as often as possible. For this, you hand out a table with slots like “noun: person, noun: thing, verb, adjective, adverb, opposite” etc. You then give them one word such as “produce”, “manageable” or “comparison” and they fill in the other word types that go with the stem word. This is also a great preparation for Use of English, Part 3.
- For Listening, work your students through the “TeQUiLaR” method to raise their concentration, i.e. make them aware that any natural listening process consists of 4 steps: first you “Tune in” – you try to set up a context of what you can hear by identifying the speaker and his country of origin as well as the atmosphere of the speech act – , then you “Question” – you ask yourself what the speaker wants to tell you or his conversation partner – , then you simply “Listen” and try to understand the contents of the words and finally you “Review” what you’ve heard – has the speaker answered the questions you posed to him in step 2?
- For Speaking, your students should draw up mind maps with lots of alternatives for each function such as “agreeing and disagreeing”, “making suggestions”, “adding a new point”, “paraphrasing missing words”. For the exam, they should learn at least three different alternatives for each function.
- Help your students with a sheet of sentences in case they find a question too hard to answer. This will relax them and support them in producing good sentences even if they cannot think of a comprehensive answer.
- Help your students with a sheet of lots of different suggestions for turn-taking. Often students get stuck with “And what do you think?”, so again, they should learn at least 3-4 alternatives by heart –and use them!

“It’s 6.00am. This is going to be a very long day for me, I think to myself, so upwards and onwards!” As one of the Cambridge ESOL consultants for Saxony, North-Bavaria and Thuringia I am visiting some schools in the very eastern part of Saxony close to the Polish-Czec border today. But first things first, I have to do the important final preparation for my visits, I mustn’t forget anything.
The week before I arranged the times for my meetings and sorted out the papers and materials I am going to show, hand-out and discuss. That’s already done and I am feeling quite relaxed. I put the leaflets and handbooks in my travel bag and do the last check of my slide presentation. Everything seems to be alright and I get ready for travelling.
Being located at the other end of Saxony, in Plauen, it is going to take me two hours to reach my first school in Bautzen. It’s 9.30 am now. Having filled up my travel mug I set off hoping for a good run without any congestions or accidents. Luck is on my side and I reach my first stop at Gottlieb-Daimler Mittelschule just in time to take a little walk for ten minutes to freshen up before I am going to see Ms Schlosser at 12.30pm. She is a very committed English teacher and has just recently started to prepare a group of students for Preliminary English Test. Being a newcomer she has a lot of questions we discuss thoroughly. I can feel she is enjoying her new task and is looking forward to enrol her students in the exam procedures. Time flies and I have to dash to my next meeting at 14.00. Straight to the other end of town I don’t have much of a chance to look at the magnificent historic centre of one of the most beautiful towns in this area. Maybe, next time.
Fighting through a maze of one-way streets I reach Melanchthon Gymnasium where I will give an introduction to our Cambridge Certificates in front of teachers from three different schools. Debra Fehse, a dear friend of mine, became head of the language department at her school last year and most importantly she is involved in teacher training courses in the region, a good portion of extra support for me.
Talking to teachers about the importance of Cambridge Certificates has always been the task I really enjoy. And being a teacher myself I know exactly what I am talking about and I know what teachers are going to face preparing students, especially those who are new to Cambridge ESOL exams. Worries about failures, concerns about exam fees, questions about the know-how and the battle for some extra money from the headmaster to buy a set of books to prepare students well. But there is an answer for everything and at the end of the meeting I have the impression that I convinced the majority to take up a preparation course for students in the near future. Leaving with an empty bag but a lot of happy faces on my mind and new contacts I am heading home. It’s 16.30. Another two hours which I use to reflect how everything went and if I did enough. Thankfully, there is hardly any traffic on the road and I arrive at my house at 18.30 where a nice cup of tea is waiting for me at the end of a busy day.”

Cambridge ESOL Prüfungen an der Helmut-Schmidt-Universität / Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg
Hans-Hermann Beth , RDir, Leiter des Sprachenzentrums der Helmut-Schmidt-Universität / Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg berichtet über seine Erfahrungen mit der Vorbereitung von Kandidaten auf Cambridge ESOL Prüfungen:
“Das Sprachenzentrum der HSU /Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg bereitet seit 1995 Studierende und Mitarbeiter der Universität auf die Cambridge ESOL Prüfungen vor – und zwar für die BEC-Vantage und BEC-Higher Abschlüsse in Business English.
Die BEC-Sprachkurse laufen als Modulveranstaltungen im Rahmen der Bachelor-Studienphase. Teilnehmer, die sich für das Ablegen der BEC-Prüfungen entscheiden, bereiten sich im Rahmen ihres Wahlpflichtmoduls Fremdsprachen sowohl auf die Abschlussprüfungen der Module (4 ECTS-Punkte), ihre militärisch vorgeschriebenen Sprachfertigkeitsprofilprüfungen (SLP), als auch auf die Cambridge-Prüfungen vor.
Zwischen 20 und 50 Kandidaten jährlich nehmen dann in der Regel im Mai oder Juni eines jeden Jahres an den Cambridge ESOL Prüfungen im Prüfungszentrum Cambridge Examinations Centre Hamburg teil, wobei die Erfolgsquote bei deutlich über 90% liegt.
Kursleitern wie Teilnehmern macht es Spaß, sich auf ein gemeinsames Ziel vorzubereiten. Der spezielle Prüfungstermin für alle Kandidaten und die Tatsache, dass diese Prüfungen außerhalb der gewohnten Campus-Umgebung stattfinden, sorgen für zusätzliche Motivation.
Als Leiter des Sprachenzentrums und langjähriger Kursleiter der BEC-Kurse kann ich mit Zufriedenheit auf diese Tradition zurückblicken, die sich in nunmehr über 16 Jahren entwickelt hat. Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Cambridge Examinations Centre Hamburg war immer außerordentlich fruchtbar und die Qualität dieser Kooperation hängt sehr stark mit einer Person zusammen, die leider zum Februar die Amtsgeschäfte beendet: Dr. Alexander Hall.
Zum Abschied sei hier diese kleine Geschichte erwähnt, die mich in den ersten Jahren der Zusammenarbeit außerordentlich beeindruckte. Sie zeigt eine Seite von Dr. Hall, die ihn neben seiner stets sehr freundlichen, kompetenten Art und Weise kennzeichnete: absolute Korrektheit! In den Anfangsjahren – noch recht lange vor der Einführung von elektronischen Anmeldeverfahren – musste man als Institution, die auf Cambridge ESOL Prüfungen vorbereitet, die Anmeldebögen für die Prüfungen direkt bei Dr. Hall anfordern – und zwar möglichst in der richtigen Anzahl. Nun hatten wir zu jener Zeit außer den BEC-Kursen auch Cambridge First, Advanced und manchmal Proficiency im Programm. Da die Kursteilnehmer sich ungern genau festlegten, ob sie an der Prüfung teilnehmen wollten, habe ich dann immer ein paar Exemplare mehr bei Herrn Hall bestellt, was zu der ein oder anderen (milden) Rüge führte.
Was dann allerdings an Anmeldebögen per Post ankam, sah „liebevoll korrekt“ aus: die Anmeldebögen hatten je Prüfung ihre eigene Farbe und waren bunt geordnet sehr gut zu unterscheiden, da sie –man höre und staune- auch durch farblich genau abgestimmte und zu der jeweiligen Papierfarbe passende Büroklammern voneinander getrennt waren . . .
Es war jedes Mal im Frühjahr ein Genuss und fast ein Ritual, den großen Umschlag vom Cambridge Examinations Centre Hamburg zu öffnen und sich an der farbenfrohen Ordnung zu erfreuen. Dieses Erlebnis gibt es nun nicht mehr, aber es wird immer an Dr. Alexander Hall erinnern, dem wir vom Sprachenzentrum der HSU/UniBW Hamburg für die exzellente Zusammenarbeit danken und dem wir für seinen nächsten Lebensabschnitt alles Gute wünschen!”
