What makes a good Speaking test candidate? Examiners give their advice and tips for the Cambridge English: First and Cambridge English: Advanced Speaking tests.

In Speaking Tests, good candidates:

  1. Listen carefully (to the tasks, their partner and their examiner).
  2.  Keep the conversation going.
  3. Interact with both their partner and the examiner.
  4. Move the conversation forward.
  5. Use eye contact.
  6. Use body language to encourage their partner.
  7. Are resourceful in their use of language.
  8. Find a way of expressing themselves (e.g. through paraphrasing).
  9. Balance fluency and accuracy.
  10. Ask questions if they don’t understand.
  11. Help their partner.
  12. Can overcome nerves.
  13. Can maintain the flow for a full minute.
  14. Know how long their answer should be (know they have to extend/contract some answers).
  15. Are not put off when the examiner interrupts.
  16. Know: Preparation is key!
